14:59 21/06 NEWS IN ENGLISH - Survey says half of all Brazilians are overweight Lisiane Wandscheer Reporter Agência Brasil Brasília - A survey by the Ministry of Health and University of São Paulo has found that between 2006 and 2009, the number of people in Brazil who are overweight rose from 42.7% of the population to 46.6%. And those considered obese rose from 11.4% of the population to 13.9%. More men (51%) are overweight than women (42.3%). A report on the survey, “Vigitel,” admits that genetic factors may be involved, but points a warning finger at eating habits and sedentary life styles. “Brazil is not alone in this problem. It is a worldwide tendency. Among other things, a result of people eating industrialized products and fast food, instead of healthy, so-called ‘slow-food,’ “ explains Deborah Malta at the ministry.
